Economic benefits from holding the World Cup 2018 for Russia will be short-term, according to the report of the international Moody’s Investors Service rating agency.
“A significant part of the economic consequences are already perceived through infrastructure investments, but even the influence there turned out to be limited. The investments connected with the World Cup and made during the 2013-2017 amounted to only 1% of the total investment amount”, as the report goes.

Nevertheless, the cities hosting the championship showed an improvement in transport and communal infrastructure. The new infrastructure will give the Russian regions additional tax revenues and reduce future capital expenditures, whereas the cities of Mordovia and Kaliningrad Oblast will benefit most of all.
On the contrary, the expenditures on the 2018 World Cup will have a negative impact on state financing in other regions, such as Saint Petersburg and Samara Oblast, and will lead to an increase in debts, according to the agency. Russian food retailers and hotels, representatives of the telecommunications and transport industries will receive a temporary increase in revenues, but the impact will be one-time and will not lead to any significant changes in the fundamentals of businesses or their credit profiles.
The entertainment programme of the World Cup 2018 includes more than 70 events: exhibitions, festivals, national holidays, interactive exhibitions, fairs of goods of regional representatives, masters of folk arts and crafts, a festival of FIFA fans, as the Mayor’s Office reported.
