A fifth of cognac in the Russian market is fake. This was stated by the head of the Roskachestvo, Maxim Protasov. "At the moment I can say that about 21 percent of those cognacs that we investigate are not made from grape alcohol, but from other kinds of spirits, - Potasov said. In this sense, of course, they cannot be called cognacs."
In February, as part of a large-scale study of cognac sold in the country, about 50 brandy brands from Russia, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and France were inspected. The price range of purchased samples ranged from 372 rubles to ten thousand. To pass the test, the product should contain only cognac, that is, grape alcohol. It cannot have other alcohols, for example, wheat or potato, which is added by unscrupulous producers.
Earlier it was reported about a reduction in the volume of retail sales of cognac in Russia. In 2017, it was sold for 10.2 million decaliters, which is 1.1 percent less than in 2016
